The June 2024 edition of Nature Neuroscience featured a package of pieces on the work of the African Ancestry Neuroscience Research Initiative. The package included the cover art (pictured), which the Lieber Institute commissioned from Baltimore-based firm Tall Glass Media.
Lieber Institute researchers including lead author Dr. Kynon Benjamin and senior author Dr. Daniel Weinberger wrote the first paper to broadly explore specifically how African ancestry influences gene function in the human brain. The research is also the first to emerge from AANRI. Read the article.
Duke University neuroscientist Dr. Kafui Dzirasa co-authored a commentary with the Lieber Institute’s Dr. Gwenaëlle Thomas and Dr. Alvin C. Hathaway Sr. entitled “Towards equitable brain genomics research, for us by us.” The commentary outlines the public and social context that motivated AANRI’s push for diversity in science and urges other researchers to push for science that benefits all.
